This is a reproduction of the 1837 map of the Republic of Texas. The Republic had been formed in the previous year when Tejanos and Anglo-Americans defeated the forces of Mexico under the dictator Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana. It shows the land grants made to the Empessarios by the Republic of Mexico. The map depicts the early republic before the founding of the cities of Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth and Austin. The counties are also not yet shown.
