細川九曜 METAL ORNAMENT
【ほそかわくよう】延享四年（１７４７）八月十五日、月例の拝賀式に諸大名が江戸城に総登城したときのことである。肥後熊本藩主の細川越中守宗孝が大広間の厠に行くと、突然、板倉修理勝該（かつよし）に背後から斬りつけられた。加害者の板倉修理は厠の中に隠れていたが、ほどなく捕らえられて切腹を命じられた。一方、深手を負った宗孝は翌日死亡した。修理が刃傷に及んだ理由は、修理には日頃から狂気の振る舞いがあったので、本家の板倉佐渡守勝清の計らいで廃嫡することにした。それを恨んだ修理は勝清を殺そうと窺っていて、誤って細川宗孝を殺してしまったのだった。それというのも、板倉家の家紋は巴を九つ描いた「板倉九曜」で、細川家の九曜紋とよく似ている。そこで誤って宗孝に斬りつけたのだった。（中略）また間違えられたのではたまらぬとばかり、家紋をそれまでの「寄り九曜」から「はなれ九曜」に改めた。（丹羽基二著「家紋 知れば知るほど」より）
