【やえじゅうろくぎく】日本の天皇家の紋章（御紋章）／南北朝以降は、武家の家紋が生成発展していくにしたがって、有功の将士に天皇の文様が賜与され、武士は武門の象徴としてそれを望むようになる。しかし、当初は、家紋としての使用を許可するといったものではなく、拝領の御衣の着用を認めるにすぎなかったが、足利、織田、豊臣氏などに菊紋の使用が許されるとともに、勝手に乱用する例も多くなった。豊臣秀吉はこのことを嫌い、天正九年（１５８１）と文禄四年（１５９５）の二度にわたって、菊紋と、公的な紋章である菊紋の禁制を行なっている。・・・江戸時代では、大名や神社仏閣などがその権威を高めるために僭用し、役者の紋や町家の商標にまで使われていた。これが公的に禁止されるのは、王政復古なった明治元年（１８６８）、太政官布告によってである。また、翌二年には、親王家の菊花紋についてその種類が規制され、のちに「皇族家紋雛形」が図示されるようになる。しかし、紋自体が図形として厳密に制定されるのは、大正十五年の「皇室儀制令」まで待たなくてはならない。ここでは、天皇はじめ各皇族方の紋章が規定され、図形としてもその位置、大きさなどが様式化される。これ以後、戦前・戦中を通して、菊花紋は皇室の紋章として厳格に保持されていくが、敗戦によって旧体制が崩壊したあと、昭和２２年に「皇室儀制令」が廃止される。現在は法的な禁令はなされていない（「日本姓氏紋章総覧」）
