This beautiful book illustration was painted by Kay Nielsen for the book "East of the Sun and West of the Moon Old Tales from the North". Kay Nielsen is from Denmark and his name is pronounced "Kigh".
This was illustrated for the fairy tale called "The Lassie and Her Godmother", a Norwegian fairy tale.

This story is about a poor couple who could not keep their baby. The baby girl grew up with her Godmother. The girl went through many trials and tribulations during her life brought to her by her enchanted Godmother.
