Irish Gardens 2011 Calendar
The gardens of Ireland stud the landscape – each one showing a different aspect of Irish life. At Powerscourt in Co. Wicklow you will find a formal Italian garden with the magnificent backdrop of Sugarloaf Mountain, a Japanese garden, a pet cemetery, fountains, a walled garden and extensive walkways around artificial ponds. Ilnacullin Garden is on a lush island in Bantry Bay. Derreen Garden in Co. Kerry is a wild woodland garden where pathways meander through the woods and beside the bay. Muckross Gardens surround Muckross House with its stunning setting of lakes and mountains. In the spring the gigantic rhododendrons are brilliant pink, red, fuchsia and white. Beside the house is a formal walled garden. Nearby is Killarney House and its famous cherry tree walkway. One of Northern Ireland’s loveliest gardens is Mount Stewart in Co. Down. Various themed gardens, whimsical statuary and fountains surround the historic house. Hidden gazebos and lakeside walks wind through the estate. Birr Castle in Co. Offaly has garden “rooms” that open onto other areas and vistas. It has a charming little waterfall, views of the historic castle and a huge telescope. Glenveagh Gardens in the wilds of Donegal contain cultivated gardens, woods, paths and lake views. On the back cover I have included Woodstock in Co. Kilkenny with its lovely roses and trellises.
