If we would just follow the policies outlined by the framers of the Constitution and in particular by George Washington in his Farewell Address, we wouldn't be having any tedious discussions on what constitutes torture and whether it is needed or justified. Our armies would be at home, guarding our borders, and we would not be resented and despised internationally. Wouldn't that be something? It's online at quite a number of places and well worth reading. In it he anticipated so many problems that have arisen; foreign countries buying up influence here, becoming embroiled in foreign conflicts that are contrary to our interests because of treaties or entanglements, branches of governments usurping powers of the others, the hazards of government debt, an over sized military that threatens liberty and other issues. One hundred percent of the time, the uninspired and unprincipled men who have followed George Washington have taken us in exactly the opposite direction than the one he recommends. We have been entirely seduced by those in both parties who tell us, contrary to the intent of all the Founding Fathers, that we must militarily dominate the rest of the world in order to guarantee order and survival. Nothing could be further from the truth. Scrupulous neutrality gave this nation peace, prosperity and happiness. Our frenzied machinations since 1913 have given us nothing but tragic war dead and what the CIA calls blowback. It needs to stop.
