Evidence of a Watery Past on Mars

This photograph shows the rock region named “El Capitan” which is situated in a larger outcrop near the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity’s landing site. It is a mosaic of smaller images taken by Opportunity’s panoramic camera. This picture clearly shows the millimeter-detailed laminar structure of the rocks, and provides positive evidence that the Meridiani Planum area of Mars was host to large amounts of water in the past.

What life form?

There's nothing on the poster that says anything about life forms. They may well exist on Mars, however, using oxygen found in the abundant water ice just below the surface at the poles. In any event there are life forms on Earth called extremeophiles that live without oxygen. They've been found under Antarctic ice, around superhot volcanic vents, eating rock beneath the sea floor, munching on hydrogen and belching methane inside Earth's crust,—even in the waste from nuclear reactors.
