Container Crane Destroyed by Gale Force Winds by mistlebee
A peaceful winter dawn contrasts sharply with the scene of destruction where the crumpled remains of a container van crane lay in a heap on the APL dock. On the first Friday of December in 2009 a seasonal gale force wind with a speed of 175 mph pushed the 10 story structure backwards, breaking the reinforced steel supports and leaving the operator's house and the boom of the crane in a heap behind the legs of the crane. It took months to remove the broken crane, after which a new crane was brought in by barge.
