US Highway 99 was the major artery serving the West Coast, made famous by John Steinbeck in his classic novel The Grapes of Wrath. It ran from Mexico to Canada, one of the few US routes to do so, not far from the present-day Interstate 5. Completely decommissioned by the end of the 1970s, parts of it linger on as state route 99 in both California and Oregon.
