The Rocky Mountain elk is a beautiful, very popular big game animal. Elk inhabit most western states and populations in many areas are increasing. Elk are better able to withstand harsh winters than deer and are less likely to fall prey to cougars and coyotes. During the fall breeding season, bull elk produce a “bugle” that combines a high-pitched wail with low grunts to attract cow elk and warn off other bulls.
