Bristlecone Pine Tree, Mount Evans, Colorado by GardenOfLife

The scientific name for the Bristlecone Pine Tree is Pinus aristata. These trees are extremely hardy in a very hostile environment and their slow growing windswept branches develop into some very interesting twisted gnarled shapes. The Bristlecone pine trees shown here were photographed on our Colorado vacation at Mount Goliath Natural Area on Mount Evans in the Colorado Rockies. Growing at the treeline, where the habitat changes from a forest area, to a cold, windy, harsh, alpine environment at an elevation of 11,500 feet, the oldest trees at this location may exceed 2,000 years. The Bristlecone pine tree has been confirmed to reach 4,000 years and may even grow to an amazing 7,000 years old. They may be the oldest trees on earth. What an amazing tree it is!
