Blue Sad by antiboris
The smiley, also known by the variants smilie and smily. Is loved by millions world round. The earliest emoticon can be traced as far back as 1881 by the satire magazine Puck. In the 1930's there were Sunkist ornages with a smily face at 3/4ths view. But the smiley as we know it was created by Harvey Ball. He was a freelance artist and was commissioned by State Mutual Life insurance to create something to boost moral. His total payment for the 10 minutes of work was 45 dollars. In 1970 the brothers Bernard and Murray Spain added the phrase "Have a nice day" and popularized it. From there it lifted off into the craze it is today.
There are various smileys for various moods. How are you feeling today?
