Why? Well, in order to understand an aspie or an autie, before their ability to communicate with you ever comes into the picture, you have to be able to hear what we are going to tell you. I'm afraid that "Autism Speaks" and various other groups dedicated to "wiping out" the "plague" of autism are making a LOT of money by telling you that you don't have to listen, don't need to understand because there is "really nothing in there." But in point of fact, while communications capabilities vary WILDLY, and social skills vary even more, the real problem is getting us to shut up about things we care about. Didja know that one diagnostic criteria for Asperger's "disease" is "an inappropriate concern for matters of justice?" I think it no coincidence at all that the majority of the "curebie" groups are infested with Republicans and other people clearly suffering from Authoritarian Personality Disorder.

Many of us are offended by "Puzzle Piece" designs.

Please quit stereotyping.
I'm an Aspie, AND I'm a proudly center-right republican. The two are not mutually exclusive. I like your designs by the way. "Autism Speaks" will never speak for me.

When you talk about rights...
You are preaching to the choir. This design - or indeed, anything I say about most things - is about other people making decisions on my behalf based on the funny pictures in their heads. I am probably putting that badly. It's not so much aspie as lack of coffee. But one thing society as a whole forgets is that social interaction is a choice for all involved. In my experience, my social skills are less important than the relative tolerance of others. And like most folks on the spectrum that I know: "High Functioning" is dependent on context. And that, folks, is also depressingly dependent upon finding a context in which one is permitted to function as one best functions. As for "better" or "worse," you might be slightly suprised; not that you are wrong - but that you are not as obviously correct as you may think. Fact is, I spent much of my childhood being dragged out of "my own little world." I liked it there. I still do. Indeed, that's where I get most of my work done.

Something else to consider...
Look, you don't have any more right to say some other autistic person shouldn't be cured than a Republican has to say that you have to be. Also, I think you lose sight of how hard it is for more severely autistic people to get along in the world. It's not exactly an advantage to not be able to engage socially with people in a way considered "normal." It's not the greatest thing since sliced bread to be trapped within yourself--I mean, that's *worse* than if there were "nobody in there." You're high-functioning. Have a little compassion for those who aren't.

Very appropriate, as well as a a truly gorgeous piece of art, and wearable as well! It seems so simple, so obvious.. just ASK... but unfortunately, folks just don't think to do so.
