1860's Stagecoach Station Ruins Print by Shadowchaser
This panoramic scene was taken near Reece Kansas and shows a single remaining portion of a wall from a previous 3 story Stagecoach Station estimated to have been built on or near 1860. My goal here was part photography and part Geo cache. Stagecoach lines are well remembered for their transportation of passengers, mail and other goods in a much earlier day in American history. They began in Texas and during the Civil War routes far more northerly were instituted by congress. The original owner and builder of this site as depicted in the photograph is not known, however my research indicates it may have been built by Col. David A. Butterfield. In about 1865 he began a stagecoach line, called the Butterfield Overland Dispatch, which transported freight and passengers from Atchison, Kansas to Denver, Colorado. Stagecoach coach lines in this area were known to have built a rest station about every 12 miles for passenger rest stops and goods transfer. The stage line was sold in 1866 to Ben Holladay. Ben Holladay sold out in 1866 to Wells, Fargo and Company. In 1870 the stage line was no longer needed as the coming of the railroad marked the end of the stagecoach era in American history.
